Crane Operator Training Course for operating non-slewing mobile crane of capacity greater than 3 tonne is designed to enable participants to learn how to safely use non slewing mobile cranes in all aspects. Non-slewing mobile cranes are referred to as Franna – after the most popular make of this type of non slewing mobile crane.
Participants are trained how to plan the franna operations – work planing,
conduct pre-start check on franna or other non slewing mobile crane,
set up the non slewing mobile crane – Franna – which includes preparing the franna for work – installing the hhok block, setting suspension lockout where applicable, setting the manual extension on non slewing mobile crane – franna crane – , setting the extension fly jib on franna etc. ,
transfer loads using non slewing mobile crane – using franna pick and carry crane,
travel with load using franna non slewing mobile crane,
shut down non slewing mobile crane – shut down the franna crane,
do post operational checkes on non slewing mobile crane,
and secure the non slewing mobile crane – secure the Franna crane after work.
To plan the work which is to be carried out on a non slewing mobile crane that requires CN – non slewing mobile crane license, one must take in consideration ate least, but not limited to: sizes and weights of loads that are to be lifted and carried with franna crane, size of the franna itself, ground stability where non slewing mobile crane or popular Franna crane is about to carry out pick & carry work, all existing and possible new hazards that might influence safe operation of franna crane, communication methods that will be used while conducting work with non slewing mobile crane, any required workplace or local authority permits for operations utilizing non-slewing mobile pick and carry crane, path of movement of non slewing mobile crane both empty and under the load, prevent others entering the path of travel of non slewing mobile crane and more.
Once the work planing for franna has been completed, thorough pre start check is carried out on non slewing mobile crane that is to be used for the task of lifting the load and/or carrying the load with franna.
After the pre start check on non slewing mobile pick & carry crane reveals that there are no defects, the franna is set up for crane operations, following all manufacturer’s specifications and relevant workplace procedures and rules for operating non slewing mobile crane.
Transferring loads with franna crane can be done utilizing winch and hook block, utilizing any of the lugs on the boom of non slewing mobile crane or utilizing the ‘rhino’ hook on the tip of the boom of franna crane. Manual boom extension or fly jib can be mounted in certain situations to enable non slewing mobile crane – franna crane – to carry out the required task, all in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications for utilizing the non slewing mobile crane of particular type, can be the popular Franna crane which is operated by CN class license holder.
As Franna crane doesn’t have stabilizers our outriggers, it is essential to ensure tyre pressures on franna crane are within prescribed manufacturer’s specifications for that particular franna. Lower than prescribed tyre pressure on franna crane can decrease stability and as a result decrease capacity of franna crane greatly, endangering the safe operations of non slewing mobile crane.
Traveling with load using franna crane is delicate operation and needs to be undertaken with great care and in accordance with all manufacturer’s recommendations for non slewing mobile crane, employer’s procedures for that particular franna and any relevant workplace conditions for operating non slewing mobile crane. All movements under load that is carried by franna crane need to be smoth and at adequate speed, as load swing can de-stabilize non slewing mobile crane and cause it to tip over.
Shutting down and securing the non slewing mobile crane or franna crane is very simple procedure that is thoroughly described within manufacturer’s specifications for utilizing non slewing mobile crane. Procedure must be followed and ensured that any additional workplace procedures for operating and shutting down the franna crane are adhered to as well.
No load can be left unattended on franna crane while the crane operator and holder of non slewing mobile crane licence CN is out of operator’s seat.
Franna needs to be left locked, overnight switch in OFF position, boom out of the way, hook at safe height, crane not under any tension, parking brakes applied, left on stable and level ground and any other conditions for leaving non slewing mobile crane unattended or overnight.
If used properly, franna cranes are great help in everyday lifting operations because on the unique capability of pick and carry, articulate under load.
Most popular non slewing mobile cranes are Franna, models 20t and 25t capacity.
There are other non slewing mobile crane models made by Franna with different capacities and different capabilities.
Other than Franna, Linmac has made some successful non slewing mobile – pick and carry – crane models.
